It’s a phrase that has little meaning to anyone but Norm Benedict — three expressions strung together in an ostensibly random way. But the phrase saturates his memory and is part of the earliest thing he can remember.

In this recollection, Benedict is waiting to get his tonsils removed, and his dad is in the operating room with him. “(My dad) looked down at me lying on the table and said, ‘thumbs up,’ and I would say, ‘thumbs up’ back, and then he would say, ‘V for victory,’ and I would say, ‘V for victory,’ and then he’d go, ‘I love you,’” Benedict says, adding that his dad made gestures to complement the words.
